Exodus has a rather complex romance system that spans a decent selection of characters. But one character you won’t be able to romance is Salt, the octopus companion, because, simply put, she thinks “humans are gross.”
During a recent preview event attended by Polygon, narrative director Drew Karpyshyn confirmed the octopus is completely off the table.
“Salt just thinks humans are gross. It’s, like, ‘They have four legs? That’s weird. That’s not enough legs. Yeah, no, not enough.’”
While, it’s not clear who is romanceable or not, it’s asserted that “many” of your companions are. Moreover, the romances are not gender-locked, something that is pretty common in these sorts of sci-fi narrative RPGs; the most obvious being Mass Effect.
You’ll also have to “actively pursue” the romances if you want it and manage a morality scale. You also can’t make everyone happy, as starting a relationship with one of the crew could perma-close another. This is all in a bid to make these “relationships feel real.”
Exodus releases April 7, 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
