It's the end of the line for Pokemon's free-to-play MOBA.

Pokemon Unite, Pokemon's free-to-play MOBA, has reached the end of the road. On Monday evening, The Pokemon Company announced that the Nintendo Switch and mobile versions of the game will no longer be playable in March 2027. That's just a few months shy of its sixth anniversary.

The following was posted to the Pokemon Unite website:

Thank you for playing Pokémon UNITE.

We regret to inform you that service for Pokémon UNITE will end on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC.

--

We offer our sincerest gratitude to the many Trainers who have played since service started for the Nintendo Switch version on July 21, 2021. We would like to express our thanks to everyone by holding a special event until service ends. The Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo competitive tournament (an event for Pokémon UNITE only) will also be held as previously announced. We hope you continue to enjoy Pokémon UNITE until the final day of service. After service ends, the "Pokémon UNITE Game Content Guidelines for Online Platforms" will no longer be published or maintained, and we will no longer provide support regarding use of Pokémon UNITE video and images.

Even as Pokemon Unite had new content announced during this year's Pokemon World Championships, there was trepidation in the air when the game was suddenly removed from the annual event's list of games. However, few could have expected that the end would come so quickly and so abruptly.

This is certainly not the first time that Pokemon has pulled the plug on supporting its spin-offs, but at least games like Pokken Tournament are still playable. Pokemon Unite is disappearing so far into the aether that Aeos Gem sales have been suspended, effective immediately. With that said, the developers are adding a library feature and are looking into further measures to allow players to interact with their Pokemon and other unlocked items even after service ends.

As of now, the final Pokemon Unite tournament is scheduled to be the Aeos Crown set to take place in Japan in 2027. Whether this will be the formal end of Pokemon in the MOBA genre or the potential site of a sequel announcement remains to be seen. For now, Pokemon Unite service will officially end on March 23, 2027. Keep an eye on the Pokemon Unite topic page as Shacknews continues to monitor this story.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
