Fable Handcrafted Every NPC Instead of Using Randomizer

Playground Games says every Fable NPC is individually designed, avoiding random traits so each character’s job, look, and personality make sense.

Where many developers would just use a randomizer, the Fable developers opted against using the generator they had built in order to better craft a unique and alive world of Albion.

Why Fable Ditched Randomized NPC Generation

Fable’s developers abandoned random NPC generation because mismatched jobs, traits, and appearances made characters feel less believable.

Fable Handcrafted Every NPC Instead of Using Randomizer

In an interview with Games Radar+, Fable director Ralph Fulton recently explained the decision to craft every detail of every NPC individually.

“We individually picked everything about every NPC to make it into an NPC that you could read, that made sense top to bottom. We originally had a tool that would randomize it, and just ‘roll’ an NPC, and that would have been a massive labor-saving device. That would have saved us so much time, but what we found was, they just didn’t make as much sense.”

Bowerstone alone is one settlement with 400 NPCs. Despite reports that the game is over budget, the developers are clearly dedicated to the craft. As previously announced, this game, which is set to release in 2027, will be the first in the series to be playable on a Sony PlayStation console.

Following the announcement that Fable is coming to PlayStation, XBOX underwent a massive reset, changing its approach to exclusivity. What are your thoughts on the upcoming Fable title? Sound off about this story and all others in our official Discord server.
