I really enjoy reading Sohei Niikawa’s posts on social media.
While I find a lot of the content on X miserable, there’s an earnestness to the Disgaea creator’s messages which I genuinely enjoy.
Recently, ahead of the release of his new game Demons’ Night Fever, he’s been talking about his goal of releasing 66 titles before he turns 75.
There’s a really amusing post he made where he did all the maths: “75 - 53 = 22 years x 3 titles per year = 66 titles. That means I can still create 66 more games! How wonderful!”
But there’s a catch – the games need to actually be successful to fund future efforts.
In a follow-up, Niikawa noted that he took out a 20 million (~$127k) loan to help fund the development of his latest title. He didn’t tell his wife!
“If the game doesn’t sell, my plan to release 66 titles by the time I turn 75 will fall apart, so please consider buying Demons’ Night Fever as a form of crowdfunding,” he wrote.
I think a lot of Niikawa’s posts are tongue-in-cheek, so I wouldn’t take him literally at his word.
The game’s out today on the PS5, and has been published by Arc System Works. It’s a strategy RPG similar to Disgaea, but where you get to commit evil acts.
Honestly, it looks pretty good, and might be worth a punt if you fancy supporting Niikawa’s goals.
